Why Are They Called ‘Wisdom Teeth’, Anyway?

West Airdrie Dentists Answer - Why are they called Wisdom Teeth anyway?

Wisdom teeth got their nickname from the age when they typically grow in.

Wisdom teeth are actually called third molars. Most people refer to the third molars as wisdom teeth, but where did they get this name? The third molars do not grow out until the dental arch becomes larger, around the age of 17-25, a time also referred to as the “age of wisdom”.

The problem is, a lot of people who need to have their wisdom teeth removed don’t make the appointment to move forward for one of three reasons:

  1. Fear of the cost,
  2. Fear it will hurt, or
  3. Fear about how much time it will take away from work or family.

99% of the time we’re able to find a way to get you the smile you want, but it helps to know what your biggest concerns are first.

Whether it’s one of the 3 reasons mentioned above or some other reason altogether, we are happy to listen to your frustrations or concerns plus answer any and every question you have (no question is too small or insignificant)!
