Serious Talk from West Airdrie Dentists About the Snoring Elephant in the Room

West Airdrie Dentists talk about snoring and sleep apnea

Snoring isn’t just something your partner does to irritate you in the middle of the night (or you to them)! It’s usually a warning sign of sleep apnea – where the throat (airway) is obstructed and you (or your partner) aren’t getting enough oxygen to your blood while you sleep.

Sometimes the result is even the cessation of breathing while asleep.

Most people with sleep apnea don’t even know that they have it, but are at higher risk of high blood pressure (heart disease, strokes), can increase cortisol (the stress hormone), affect brain function and even lead to depression.

In the past, sleep apnea patients have been given a large machine and mask that covers most of their face and head in order to ensure that they get enough oxygen during the night (called a CPAP machine – Continuous Positive Air Pressure).

The problem is, the machines are loud, the mask is bulky, doesn’t travel well, and if the mask doesn’t fit properly it can cause skin irritation and redness. As a result, people don’t wear the mask as often as they should, which is harmful to their health.

At West Airdrie Dental Clinic, we have an alternative to that frustrating machine! For some, it makes sense for us to create a custom appliance which fits in the mouth at night. No machine. No mask. Easy to clean, easy to transport or store.

If you’ve ever had braces, think of a retainer, but that aligns the tongue and jaw to help move air while you sleep.

Your nights can be filled with rest and relaxation instead of snoring (or turning your partner over to get them to stop snoring)!
