If you are someone who suffers from anxiety and stress when going to the dentist, West Airdrie Dental is here to help! We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry options, so you can receive the dental care you need.
Your Choice for West Airdrie Sedation Dentistry!
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help anxious patients remain pain-free and relaxed during dental procedures. At West Airdrie Dental, we offer three types of sedation to relieve your anxiety and help you relax. Sedation options are also available for children, so your little ones will not develop dental anxiety as they grow!
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, offers light sedation for mild to moderately anxious patients, or anyone who would benefit from feeling calmer during a dental visit. Patients breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, administered through a mask that is worn over the nose, which helps to relax them and allows them to remain calm and comfortable during treatment. The effects take only a few moments to start working, and wear off quickly as well, so you are able to drive home
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is a light to moderate sedation offered to anxious patients and is administered by taking one or two prescribed pills of a sedative medication before a procedure or appointment. It is strong enough to bring about a feeling of sleepiness and therefore a more relaxed state, which ultimately helps to alleviate a patient’s stress or anxiety. An initial dose is taken about an hour before your appointment. Sometimes an additional dose may be taken the night before a procedure to help with anxiety-related insomnia.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is an intravenous method of sedation that offers an immediate effect through administration through the bloodstream through a carefully placed IV in the vein. With IV sedation, also known as twilight, your dentist is able to adjust the dosage from minimal to deep. This allows patients to still be awake during the procedure but feel no pain. It also allows the dentist the ability to administer another drug to wake you up later on.
